Getting Started
You can be set up in a minute:
- Add your subjects — Tap Add Subject on the Home screen or in the Subjects tab, or tap Scan timetable to import your whole timetable from a photo, PDF, or text (see Smart Import). If you haven’t created a semester (term) yet, Student Trove creates one for you, for example “Term 4 2026”. You can rename it or change its dates any time in Settings > Semesters.
- Add classes and tasks — Add classes in the Timetable tab and assignments in the Calendar tab, or let Smart Import add your classes for you.
- Explore the dashboard — The home screen shows today’s classes, tasks due, and your grades once you have data. If your term hasn’t started yet, it tells you when it starts.
Timetable
Prerequisite: You need at least one course before you can add classes. See Getting Started.
Build your weekly class schedule:
- Add a class — In the Timetable tab, tap +, select a subject, choose a day, and set start/end times.
- Set a venue — Optionally add a room or building name for each class.
- Switch views — Toggle between list view (day-by-day) and grid view (full week overview).
Conflict detection: If two classes overlap on the same day, Student Trove highlights the conflict so you can fix it.
Tasks & Calendar
Track assignments, deadlines, and reminders:
- Create a task — Tap + in the Calendar tab. Set a title, due date, optional reminder, and link it to a subject.
- Recurring tasks — Enable recurrence to repeat a task daily, weekly, or on custom days.
- Calendar views — Switch between month view and agenda view. Dots on the calendar indicate days with tasks.
- Mark complete — Tap the checkbox to mark a task as done. Completed tasks move to the bottom of the list.
- Show tasks first — Plan around deadlines rather than lectures? Turn on Settings > Display > Show Tasks First to list tasks above your classes in the calendar’s day view.
- Tasks widget (Android) — Long-press your home screen, choose Widgets, and add the Student Trove Tasks widget. It shows your pending tasks, overdue first, and opens the Calendar when you tap it.
Note: Linking a task to a course requires that the course already exists. You can create tasks without a course link, but to organise them by subject, add your courses first.
Grades
Prerequisite: Grade categories live under courses, so you must add your courses first before recording grades.
Track assessments with weighted categories:
- Add a grade category — Open a subject’s grades and create categories like “Tests”, “Assignments”, or “Exams”. Assign a weight to each.
- Record grades — Add individual grades within each category. Enter the score and total.
- View GPA — Check your calculated GPA in multiple systems (4.0 scale, percentage, etc.) from the grades summary.
- Weight subjects and terms — Give a subject a weight (or credits, at university) in its edit dialog, and a term a weight in Settings > Semesters. The Grades screen then shows weighted averages for each term and for the whole year. A weight of 0 leaves a subject or term out of your averages.
Projections: See what score you need on remaining assessments to reach a target grade.
Attendance
Keep track of your class attendance:
- Mark attendance — After a class, mark it as attended, missed, or excused from the timetable or attendance tab.
- View stats — See your attendance rate per subject and overall. A visual indicator shows when you are below a target threshold.
Smart Import 1 free, then Premium
Smart Import reads your timetable, task list, or results and adds them to Student Trove for you. You don’t need to add subjects first: when a class names a subject you don’t have yet, the subject is created for you. Your first import is free; after that, Smart Import is part of Premium.
How to import
Open Smart Import from Scan timetable on the Home screen, the scan button on the Timetable, or the menu on the Calendar. Then choose a source:
- Image — Take a photo or pick an image of your timetable.
- PDF — Select a PDF file.
- Text — Paste your timetable or task text, for example from a website.
After scanning: Review the detected records and fix anything that looks wrong. A class with a new subject shows as “New: Mathematics”, or you can add it to a subject you already have. A lecture, tutorial, and practical of the same subject go into one subject. Tap Apply to add everything.
Where your file goes
To read your timetable, Smart Import sends the image, PDF, or text to the Student Trove import service, which uses third-party services (OCR.space for text recognition and Google Gemini to organise the results). Nothing is kept by the import service after the result is returned. Smart Import uses Google’s free Gemini API tier, so Google may use the content to improve its products, and human reviewers may read it. Don’t use Smart Import for documents with personal or sensitive information. Smart Import needs an internet connection. Privacy details
Troubleshooting
- “No records detected” — The scanner couldn’t find any classes or tasks. Try a clearer photo, crop to just the timetable, or paste the text instead.
- Poor recognition quality — Use a clear, well-lit photo taken straight on. Avoid skewed or blurry images.
- “Give every class a subject name” — A class was detected without a subject. Type the subject into that record, or untick it.
- Missing end times — Many timetables only show start times. Classes without an end time get a one-hour slot; you can change it before tapping Apply or edit the class later.
- Import failed or timed out — Check your internet connection and try again.
Study Planner Premium
Plan focused study sessions across your subjects:
- Generate a plan — The study planner creates a suggested schedule based on your timetable, upcoming deadlines, and subject priorities.
- Track sessions — Start a study session timer and log how long you study for each subject.
- Adjust priorities — Mark subjects as high priority to allocate more study time to them.
Insights & Analytics Premium
Understand your academic patterns:
- Study distribution — See how your study time is split across subjects.
- Busiest days — Identify which days have the most classes or tasks.
- Grade trends — Track how your grades change over time within each subject.
- Attendance insights — View attendance patterns and spot trends.
Insights update automatically as you add data throughout the semester.
Sync Across Devices
Use Student Trove on your phone, tablet, and the web app and keep everything in step:
- Sign in — Sign in with the same account on each device (tap the account icon in the top-left corner).
- That’s it — Changes sync automatically: shortly after you edit something, when you open the app, and every couple of minutes while it’s open. Changes from your other devices appear without you having to do anything.
If the same item is changed on two devices, the most recent change wins. Auto-sync can be turned off in Settings > Data Management.
Backup & Restore
Keep your data safe with local backups:
- Create a backup — Go to Settings > Backup and tap Export Backup. A JSON file is saved to your device.
- Restore — Tap Import Backup and select a previously exported file. Your data will be restored.
Backups include all semesters, subjects, classes, tasks, grades, and attendance records.
Import / Export (ICS, CSV)
Share your data with other apps:
- ICS export — Export your timetable or tasks as an ICS file to import into Google Calendar, Outlook, or Apple Calendar.
- CSV export — Export grades or attendance data as CSV for use in spreadsheets.
Export options are available from the relevant screen’s menu (three-dot icon).
